A Little About Salinas
Salinas, Ecuador is located in the Santa Elena Province about 144 Km / 90 mi from the city of Guayaquil (about 90 minutes to the Guayaquil Int'l Airport or GYE airport call letters), on the protruding end of the South Pacific coast and part of the province of Santa Elena, in the area known as "Puntilla de Santa Elena" (Salinas peninsula, the westernmost point of South America), comprising three large cities: Salinas, La Libertad and Santa Elena. Salinas has been formed as a city that is predominantly based on tourism of sun, sea and sand, with a first class hotel infrastructure. The average temperature year round for the Salinas coastal area ranges from 65-85 degrees Fahrenheit with about 11-12 hours of daylight per day. Approximately 300-340 days of sunshine per year and very comfortable, low humidity year round provides the near-perfect weather. Rainfall averages 4-5" per year and will remind you of the San Diego, Orange, Los Angeles and Ventura county beaches and terrain where the desert meets the sea. Think of a Mediterranean climate like Malibu, La Jolla, Santa Barbara, Ventura, Santa Monica, Huntington Beach areas - but at 1970's - 1980's prices.
The City of Salinas, Ecuador has a steady year-round population of around 50,000 inhabitants with another approximately 30,000 in rural areas. During high season or holidays the population increases in Salinas by about 50-100%. The non-Ecuadorian population is generally composed of various nationalities especially from the USA, Canada, Europe, Asia and Australia. Currently there are approximately 400-500 expats (and growing) living in the Salinas area.
Tourist attractions include admiring the natural charms of this fascinating resort, the beautiful dance of humpback whales who come to within 2-8 km from the coast (May-Nov). It is captivating to envision the rest of the slow and gentle sea lions in the area as well. Go scuba diving off the island of Peel near Ayangue or right off the coast. Salinas is home to tennis championships and famous beauty pageants, the freshest seafood around, sailing regatta's, rappelling, paragliding, hang gliding and fishing. Featuring five-star hotels, places to go diving, surfing, swimming and deep sea fishing (did you know the world record Marlin catch was just off Punta Carnero about 10 miles from Salinas? A 1450 pounder no less!). Home to world famous La Chocolatera, a large chunk of land which is used as an Ecuadorian military base and is the westernmost point of all of South America, and much more.
